Steering Knuckle Fluorescent Magnetic Particle Detector

The fluorescent magnetic particle detector for steering knuckles is a specialized non-destructive testing (NDT) system designed to detect surface and slightly subsurface flaws (like cracks, porosity, or laps) in automotive steering knuckles, which are critical load-bearing and safety components in a vehicle’s suspension and steering system.

How the Detector Works?

  1. Magnetization:
    • Either circular or longitudinal magnetization, or both in sequence, is applied.
    • Due to the complex geometry, multi-directional magnetization is often used to ensure full coverage.
  2. Application of Fluorescent Particles:
    • Fluorescent magnetic particles are sprayed or immersed onto the surface.
    • Particles accumulate at discontinuities due to magnetic leakage fields.
  3. UV Light Inspection:
    • The part is inspected under UV-A black light in a darkened chamber.
    • Flaws glow bright green/yellow against a dark background.

System Components:

  1. . Magnetizing Station
  • Custom fixtures to hold irregularly shaped knuckles.
  • Electromagnetic coils or clamp electrodes for magnetization.
  • Often uses wet horizontal units adapted with jigs.
  1. Fluorescent Particle System
  • Spray system or immersion tank with recirculating magnetic bath.
  • Fine particles in water or oil carrier, designed for high sensitivity.
  1. UV Inspection Booth
  • Darkroom enclosure with UV-A LED lighting (~365 nm).
  • Conforms to ASTM/ISO UV intensity and darkness standards.
  1. Demagnetization Unit
  • Ensures residual magnetism is removed after inspection.
  1. Control System
  • Allows programmable control of magnetization sequence, spray duration, and inspection timing.
